About

Background

SLATE-Z was founded as a place-based, collective impact effort to strategically capitalize on neighborhood revitalization opportunities connected to transit-oriented development.

With the development of Metro’s “K” line on Crenshaw Avenue, the community saw an opportunity to examine and harness the economic impacts that the “K” line would bring to the region, and decided to work together for the benefit of the historic community.

Transit provides access to life’s opportunities and can also aid in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental harm that has plagued South Los Angeles. Effective transit-oriented solutions in South Los Angeles stimulate economic activity and provide equitable access to education, workforce development, wellness opportunities, and more.

Goal

Improve community infrastructure by increasing the affordability, safety, and use of current and emerging public mobility options

Activities

• Develop innovative solutions and pilot projects that help historically disadvantaged communities reduce greenhouse gas emissions, access to clean transportation, and increase affordable transit passes, including Universal Basic Mobility and Fareless Transit for students.

• Advocate for the improvement of diverse mobility options and streetscape infrastructure including greenspace to increase safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders.

Projects & Initiatives

Rail To Rail Active Transportation Corridor

A 6.4-mile active transportation, pedestrian, and bicycle corridor that will connect Southeast Los Angeles and South Los Angeles with high quality mobility options to the Crenshaw ‘K’ Line, Silver ‘J’ Line, and Blue ‘A’ Line. Scheduled for completion in 2024.

Universal Basic Mobility Pilot

The pilot will bring e-bikes, shared EV cars, and on-demand EV shuttle service, in addition to a partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (METRO) to subsidize transit fares for 2000 South LA residents who have historically lacked options for how to get to where they need to go safely.

South LA Eco Lab

Transforming South Los Angeles into a healthy, thriving neighborhood — one with lush green spaces, clean air, renewable energy infrastructure, and dynamic mobility options for pedestrians, bikers, and public transit. Projects will plant 6,000 shade and fruit trees, install solar roofs and EV charging stations, expand car-sharing and the LADOT e-bike library, provide free Metro passes to 10k+ eligible residents, provide free tenants rights workshops, and more.

Fareless Transit Passes for Students

The Los Angeles Metro system has the highest percentage of low-income riders in the nation -and now, Metro and LAUSD are supporting those riders by providing fareless transit to TK-12 and community college students. SLATE-Z and its partners were key players in this effort, working to catalyze this incredible change.
