Background

At SLATE-Z, partners work to reduce violent crime within the South Los Angeles area while making it accessible for all residents to inhabit safe, crime-free zones through prevention, intervention, reentry, and resident engagement.

SLATE-Z’s Public Safety efforts are interrelated with its other levers of change: education, jobs, transit, and small business and entrepreneurship.

Goal

Reduce violent crime by improving services for youth leadership development, gang-intervention, support for youth and adults re-entering the community from incarceration, and community engagement.

Activities
  • Advocate for community-informed justice system policies and equitable resource allocation to address violent crime in the community.
  • Expand youth development services to develop leadership & promote overall wellness.

Projects & Initiatives

Youth Advisory Council

The Public Safety Workgroup is focused on reducing violent crime by improving services for youth leadership development, gang intervention, support for youth and adults reentering the community from incarceration, and community engagement. The development of a Youth Council Structure came out of a focus on expanding youth development services to develop leadership and promote overall wellness for youth in the community.
