About

Background

SLATE-Z sees education as a critical gateway to address poverty and wealth building due to the high percentage of people with low education rates in South Los Angeles, compared to the rest of LA County.

The South Los Angeles Promise Zone consists of educational assets (e.g., high schools, community college, university, etc.) that are working collaboratively to ensure that those institutions prepare South Los Angeles residents for the economic opportunities ahead.

SLATE-Z’s Education efforts are interrelated with its other levers of change: jobs, transit, public safety, and small business and entrepreneurship.

Goal

Increase student attainment of certificates, degrees, and preparation for careers by guaranteeing post-secondary career pathway enrollment and support.

Activities

  • Increase career readiness and work-based learning opportunities (e.g., summer job placements, internships, etc.)
  • Expand dual enrollment and strengthen curricular alignment to increase degrees and certificate completion
  • Provide seamless transitions and coordinated academic/student support services to increase college completion rates
  • Support student readiness to enter the new climate economy

Projects & Initiatives

Fareless Transit Passes for Students

The Los Angeles Metro system has the highest percentage of low-income riders in the nation -and now, Metro and LAUSD are supporting those riders by providing fareless transit to TK-12 and community college students. SLATE-Z and its partners were key players in this effort, working to catalyze this incredible change.

Foster Youth Resource Fair

In order to support the approximately 50 youth in foster care who were both connected to the SLATE-Z area and would be aging out of the system by the end of 2021, SLATE-Z’s Foster Youth Subcommittee hosted a resource fair held on the campus of Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC). The event brought together workforce development, housing, legal assistance, and other resources to South Los Angeles foster youth.
